Developmental editing is focused on the bigger picture of your book. It's all about making your story clearer, more coherent, and more effective. It's best to do this early in the writing process to make your final product polished and engaging. This is typically the first round of edits you'll do with an editor.

Line editing is all about making sure your writing maintains consistency. It's about fine-tuning anything regarding spelling, grammar, punctuation, readability, overall flow, and more. This typically happens closer to the end of your writing process as you're prepping for final edits.

Copy editing is a little different than line editing. It's about addressing more technical issues in the text. Instead of focus on readability and flow, it's more about catching typos, fixing grammar, and generally making sure the writing shines. It's the last step before proofreading.

Edit others as you would want to be edited.
Point out a problem, but don't try to fix it.
Keep the author's voice intact.
Trust that the author knows what their readers want.
Look for consistency in characters, story, world building and arcs.
Always remind the author that their voice has a place in the literary world.
